SharePoint 2010 Migration Woes: Importing and exporting lists template between different SP2010 Servers
Migrations of SharePoint contents from one server to another can be a big PITA. Once I came across a scenario where I had to export a couple of lists from SharePoint online i.e. Office 365 to the SharePoint 2010 on my local server. What I did is to copy the required lists along with content by creating a list template i.e. via .stp file. Then I upload it to my local SharePoint 2010 server's list template gallery. Later I successfully created a new list with the uploaded template.
This did the magic for me and I hope that this helps you as well.

For that I took the following steps:
- Open your SharePoint site in the SharePoint designer 2010.
- Select Lists and libraries.
- Select you desire list and the click on the "Save as Template" from the ribbon. You'll be redirected to the SharePoint site and there after filling in the required fields and pressing OK , .stp will be created. This template can be viewed in Site Action -> Site Setting -> Galleries ->List Template.
- Select the list template and then from the ribbon's document tab, press "Download a Copy" and this will give a temple in .stp format.
- Now Log into your local SharePoint site as the site Administrator.
- From the Site Actions drop-down menu in the top right, select Site Settings.
- Under the Galleries section, select List templates.
- Select Upload to load an application template into this SharePoint site.
- Browse to the .stp file from the distribution and select Open. If you have several application templates to load into your site, you can use the Upload Multiple Files and option to load them all at once.
- Click "Ok" to complete the upload of the application template to your SharePoint site.
- This way this template will appear in the template gallery and thus can be used for creating list with this schema. Site Action -> More Option, select list and you would find your template there.
Problem
But that is the normal case .The above mentioned seem quite straight forward but it can be complicated considering the configuration of the your "Parent SharePoint server". In my case the Parent SP was in german and the template that came out had a different configuration. So when I uploaded the template using above steps and checked template library it was visible there. Now to create a list using that template, I could not see my template in the gallery.
Solution:
The work around for that was to modify the.stp file, which was created when we make the list template. So here are the steps :
.OPTION EXPLICIT

.Set CabinetNameTemplate=mylist.stp
.Set Cabinet=on
.Set Compress=on
;The files specified below are stored, compressed, in the cabinet file 30000000.000
manifest.xml
Under manifest.xml we can write down all the files which should be inclided in the new .stp file.
Now to create the .stp file, open the DOS command promp and move to list folder where .ddf file is placed. Type in this command: makecab /f definition.ddf

- Create a list template. You can do this in the list settings. Just click "Save list as template" and give in the the file name and the template name.
- Download the created template to a local folder.
- Extract the template file
- Now we will modify the .stp file. An .stp file is just a cabinet file (as .wsp is a .zip file). Simply rename the file from "list.stp" to "list.cab". You can now open the file and see all the content inside.
- Now creat a local folder e.g "C:\temp\list" and copy all files within the cab file.
- Amongst these content you will find manifest.xml in the lists folder and just change the language code within the xml to the destination language code. I changed from 1031 to 1033 converting German to English. For further details on that click here.
- Now we go to convert this .cab file to .stp again which is slightly complicated.
- For that we create a .ddf file by Creating a new file in the list folder and rename it to "definition.ddf".
- Open the .ddf file and paste the fallowing code inside:
